Commentary/Review
If this isn't the saddest, cutest, most joyful little children's book, then I'm not certain what is (Disclaimer: I don't read a lot of children's books). This story is based on a true story of two male penguins who wanted to start a family. For months, that sat on a rock, trying to get the "egg" to hatch. Until one day, a kind zoo keeper notice that not only were two male penguins in love, but that they were trying to start a family by hatching a rock. The Zoo Keeper, Mr. Gramzay found an egg that needed caring, and decided to give these two would be fathers an opportunity. Roy and Silo, the penguins, knew just what to do. They kept the egg warm until it hatched, then started caring for their very own baby penguin, Tango. The story is really simply a story about families and love. What's amazing about it is its utter simplicity. Two penguins meet, fall and love, then try to raise a family. They need a little help; but otherwise the cycle of their lives pretty much mimic the cycles of the other penguins surrounding them. I happened upon this book when reading an article, "Gay Penguin Book Shakes Up Ill. School". Apparently, the parents of Shiloh, Ill are or were up in arms that a true story, about two penguins who would be fathers, might get into the hands of their unprepared children.A picture book about two male penguins raising a baby penguin is getting a chilly reception among some parents who worry about the book's availability to children — and the reluctance of school administrators to restrict access to it.Their (the Shiloh parents) quest was to get the book labeled matured-theme. Really, a children's picture book, which tells the true, and not a bit racy story of two penguins raising a third? I had to see what the controversy was about; and all I found was a joyous little children's book with amusing illustrations of two penguins trying to hatch a rock; who later became a family with a little help from a kind zoo keeper. The story is warm, and heartfelt, and perfect for little children. Of course the controversy, really wasn't about the book itself; but about letting children know that homosexuality occurs in nature. It's a bit harder to tell your kids homosexuality is wrong, when there are examples of birds, bees, penguins, and other animals living their merry lives in homosexual relationships.
