Commentary/Review
An added measure of grace…is a wonderful descriptive of civility. in “The Ice Palace That Melted Away” Bill Strumpf addresses the disappearing layers of civility in society.
One of my favorite books. I often use it to reground myself-when I find my hope and kindness slipping away into dark, ugly, greys of anger, fear, and un-certainity.
I happened upon ‘The Ice Palace that Melted Away’ in a corner bookstore, when I stilled in the Bay Area. Unaware, Stumpf captured me and my feelings of longing for compassion, service, and civility that I felt slipping away all around me. From the design of workspaces, to the use of technology, to that lack of eye contact, or genuine smiles on peoples faces.
I’ve never questioned mankind’s capacity for violence, corruption, and degradation of all things good. But while I’ve never been one to wonder at the horrors of society, I’ve always been amazed by the wonders—from tapered lawns to towering buildings to warm, firm handshakes, laughing, gentle eyes, blue skies, and the whole miraculous beauty of it all that we casually contribute to.
Civility is societies lubricant, a slippery, smooth, glossy fluid that allows us to move through good times and hard times alike. When everything gets too much, and I feel the brittleness of despair capturing me, I turn to ‘The Ice Palace that Melted Away’. It’s not a self-help book or even masterfully written. It’s just a fairly clean, presentation of how civility benefits all of our lives from places, possessions, and purposes. That ‘added measure of grace’ that provides us joy and compassion.
