A Walk Through Hell

The Boston Globe's Big Picture blog, has amazing images from the Northern California fires.

A number of wildfires burned across Northern California late last week, and over the weekend. Firefighters have them all under control now, with the largest, the Humboldt Fire, now 90% contained with 74 homes destroyed, and at least $11 million in damage. Residents began returning to their homes to see what survived, and what could be salvaged. -California Fires, The Big Picture for the Boston Globe

The Big Picture is rapidly becoming one of my favorite blogs to read. It’s a topical blog as viewed through photos. Kind of like a new school, National Geographic.

“What’s so great about it?” you may ask. Pictures. Bold, beautiful, visual, pictures with informative captions. The pictures tell a story sometimes amazing in its clarity and focus— such as the California Fires piece; and sometimes chaotic—Daily Life in Sadr City, Iraq. But far more powerful than the reused minimalist take of Reuters or the Associated Press. Sure a well-written, in-depth piece by the New York Times, Washington Post, International Herald Tribune, or the BBC can be just as informative and engaging; but ideally a best of both worlds approach could photos to engage and inform; and a well written story to provide context, continuity, and nuanced balance.

The Big Picture is primarily just the pictures and captions, with a brief paragraph introduction. But the pictures are spectacular and the captions just as informative as the images. They make you want to know more. Something lacking in a lot of the current news.
