All’s Fair in Love and War?

"Is All Fair in Love and War?" or is that really just something people say to justify bad behavior.

I’m watching Showtime’s the L Word, and the irony is not lost on me. As I sit and pray that Alice will kiss or seduce Dana away from Tanya; I wonder about Candace’s continuing role in the demise of Bette and Tina.

My question is, “Is All Fair in Love and War?” or is that really just something people say to justify bad behavior. Think about it. Really, think. So many people, when they’re on the outside, fighting for “their love,” everything and all things are fair, even compromising an existing relationship. But when they are inside the relationship, we hear phrases like, “the sanctity of marriage”, etc., etc..

So if when is “all fair” versus “honoring an existing relationship”?

Obviously, my moral stance is mitigated by entertainment value, at least as it relates to the Alice-Dana-Tanya versus Tina-Bette-Candace triangles. I dislike Tanya, so please feel free to screw her over. Besides Alice and Dana are so cute together, just look at them..

But in my defense, I also don’t believe Tanya loves Dana. Whereas, Candance knew she was interfering in a long-term relationship, and continued to strike while Bette was at her weakest. Of course this doesn’t dismiss Bette’s culpability. But after all, it is a TV Show, and its much easier to justify even bad behavior, so long as it’s entertaining. But what about in real life?

So while we’re not coveting, are we declaring war? And when we declare war, is it okay if our would be love is listed among the casualities--those destroyed by our actions, even if we hope to help them mend? Is it really fair, to see what you want and take it, when that’s considered bad behavior in all other aspects of life.

Being strong, determined, open, honest, vulnerable, decisive, and even charming is all good. But how far would you go to win love, when the object of your affection is already committed to someone else?
