Cyndi Lauper with Sarah McLachlan: Time After Time

Cyndi Lauper(1) has a new album out, the Body Acoustic. The album revisits a number of old favorites from her past, and introduces a couple of new songs. I've been a fan of Cyndi's since her She's So Unusual album, back in 1984. For me, the video music revolution was just underway. It was my introduction to pop and rock, coming from a solid background of Gospel, R&B, and secretly coveted 30s-60s musicals. Cyndi was brash, bold, punk-pop and unrepentantly, female. She's So Unusual was pure, solid fun. Girls Just Want To Have Fun and She Bop sealed the deal on my foray into music as an exploration. Since then, I've collected music from a wide number of genres and styles, that continues to grow today.

That said, while I loved She's So Unusual, it wasn't until the release of Time After Time, that I recognized that Ms. Lauper's talent extended beyond the bold, brash, and youthful, punk-pop. It had soul and classical undertones. Compared to the pop, flash, and fun of Girls Just Want To Have Fun and She Bop, Time After Time was stripped down and tender with it's plaintive refrain, time after time. Cyndi followed with the album True Colors and I placed her on my must watch list; a move I haven't regretted.

Since then, I've purchased: A Night to Remember, Hatful of Stars, Twelve Deadly Cyns…, At Last, Shine, and now The Body Acoustic. Not her full discography, but fairly close. Lauper has this emotive voice that can be both raspy and crisp; and she's never been afraid to be creative with it. I have a laundry list of favorites from her; but if I had to list a top five—Time After Time would make it. Throughout the years, I've heard a number of renditions of it; and Cyndi's original has always been my favorite. Now that's no longer true.

Cyndi Lauper has been dethroned by Cyndi Lauper with Sarah McLachlan. I believe the duo originally performed this song live at the Decades Rock Live! in tribute to Cyndi Lauper. In the song, Sarah's voice joins Cyndi's on the second verse. You can hear her distinctive vocals sing…

Sometimes you picture me -
I'm walking too far ahead

I love Sarah's voice next to, up against, and joined with Cyndi's. When they first sing duet, I was afraid their vocals wouldn't be as complimentary as when they alternated voices. And it's true at first introduction, their styles and tones seem to clash, but as the song continues they seem to find solid ground. Cyndi often takes the high end vocals and Sarah the low, soft, honeyed sounds. By the time the song ends, I find myself hitting the repeat button. Take a quick listen.

Sound Clip

Lyrics

Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick,
And think of you
Caught up in circles confusion -
Is nothing new
Flashback - warm nights -
Almost left behind
Suitcases of memories,
Time after -

Sometimes you picture me -
I'm walking too far ahead
You're calling to me, I can't hear
What you've said -
Then you say - go slow -
I fall behind -
The second hand unwinds

Chorus:
If you're lost you can look - and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you - I'll be waiting
Time after time

After my picture fades and darkness has
Turned to gray
Watching through windows - you're wondering
If I'm OK
Secrets stolen from deep inside
The drum beats out of time -

Chorus:
If you're lost...

You said go slow -
I fall behind
The second hand unwinds -

Chorus:
If you're lost...
...Time after time
Time after time
Time after time
Time after time

(1) Wikipedia: You’ll note that I’ve started using Wikipedia for a number of my links.

They join iTunes Music Store (iTMS), Internet Movie Database (IMDB.com), Amazon.com, and Answers.com on my list of favorite places to reference.  Why? Because they all act as living references—meaning they are consistently and continuously updated to provide you active and historical content. Also, when possible, some of the sites offer user input (community) features such as user reviews, comments, and or user updates.

Obviously, I’ll still link to other sites, blogs, and newspapers; but frequently those links become obsolete. Hence my desire to grow a list of ten dominate reference sites that meet the following criteria— a) links should have a minimal life cycle of five years; b) especially for people, places, and technology, references should be “living"—frequently updated to reflect the changing times; and c) references/links should sustain and support community inclusion in which ever manners are appropriate for the media type. Of course, these join the basic criteria of accuracy, and depth of information that I normally seek for my links.
