How Could I Forget Michael Jackson?
As testament to my growing addiction to the iTunes Music Store (iTMS), I’ve recently noticed a habit to sample and purchase from artists who have come out in support of the store. Yes, i now own Avril Lavigne (I’m not too ashamed, “Complicated” is a pretty cool pop song). Recently, MacDaily News released an article on Michael Jackson and his response to proposed House Copyright Legislation, Authors, Consumer and Computer Owners Protection and Security Act of 2003 (ACCOPS Act) (as PDF).
We can discuss the heinous law some other time, but for now my focus is on the music of Michael Jackson. My immediate response after reading the article was to fire-up iTunes and do an iTMS search on Michael Jackson. Irritatingly enough, most of his work is available ONLY in the single format. So I new some singles that i wanted, who could forget Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough, or Billie Jean, or a personal favorite, Smooth Criminal. Needless to say, i found myself clicking and purchasing, showing my support for Michael or Apple, or Michael’s support of Apple, or well possible just support of top level artist who isn’t an asshole about copyrights, peer-to-peer, and digital downloads.
Its hit our miss, but my $0.99 was miraculously transformed into about $10 worth of music, and for today ONLY, I am on a Michael Jackson pop-high. I rekin its akin to a hit of ecstasy rather than a shot of herion. Not that I’ve done either, but I always imagine X would be this kind of feel good dance til you drop type of trip. And since, I just pranced, slid, and jumped my way across the floor (thank god for hardwood) to the beats of “Wanna be Startin’ Something”, I say it qualifies.
Mired in all the controversy, strangeness, and “King of Pop” crownings, I had forgotten that Michael Jackson is a damn good musical artist. Through writing, producing, and performing, Mr. Jackson has changed the world of music. All change has good and bad elements, but I’d like to focus on the good-- a body of music that is amazing, and the ability to make me forget for a moment that I’m 35 and my knees really just aren’t what they use to be.
