London from Above, at Night

The Boston Globe's Big Picture blog, has these amazing aerials of London.

With the end of the Olympics in Beijing, all eyes turned for a moment to London, site of the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympics. While looking for good photographs of London, I was contacted by London photographer Jason Hawkes, who had some wonderful images of London, seen from above at night (from a helicopter, to be exact) - some of which which he’s agreed to let me share here.

From Jason: ”Shooting aerial photography during the daytime had its own difficulties, you are strapped tightly into a harness leaning out of the helicopter, shouting directions through the headsets to the pilot. If shooting in the day can be difficult, night and the lack of light causes its own set of problems, but overcoming them is half the fun and the results can be stunning. I shoot at night using the very latest digital cameras, mounted on either one or two gyro stablazied mounts, depending on the format of the camera and length of lens I’m having to use.” -London from above, at night, The Big Picture for the Boston Globe

The Big Picture is one of my favorite blogs to look at. It’s a topical blog as viewed through photos. Kind of like a new school, National Geographic. You should note that, it’s no longer in the ‘rapidly becoming’ stage. The Big Picture is my favorite photo blog.

“These London photos are amazing!” If you’re use to damp, and dreary; or the overly green parkscapes photos of London. Prepared to be blown away. Jason Hawkes has capture London in bold, beautiful, moving colors. The visuals are astounding; possibly worth the helicopter fare even if you consider helicopters flying death traps. The pictures provide a view of London as comparable to New York. Alive, vibrant, bold, full of skyscrapers, and traffic, and an active nightlife. Go give them a look: The Big Picture

   This image is truly amazing! I love London, been there 4 times but have never had the opportunity to just take a flight around and see it from the air.

   The photo reminds me of lava flowing. In any event, this photograph is simply amazing!

   And I agree, I love The Big Picture blog as well. Some great, inspiring photography!
