Madison, Wisconsin: Packing

So I started packing last Friday. It’s kind of exciting, fun, well and sneezy. As I’ve gotten older my allergies have gotten a bit stronger. I own a cat, and I’m allergic to cats. I’m allergic to dust, my house has dust. You see the pattern. Mostly this is no big deal, except that packing involves moving items, I haven’t touched in years, in bulk. Dust and cat hair from places that really should be self-cleaning fill the air, and my eyes are red. My nose is running. I’m sneezing frequently. I have that awful scratchiness in the back of my throat, you know the one that makes you start trying to lick it and produces that clicking sound. Don’t lick. It only makes things worse, but control is so hard.

So I’m sneezing and preparing boxes in two sets: 1) that will go to Madison, and 2) the others are donations to the United Cerbal Palsey (UCP). UCP, St. Vincent DePauls, even Goodwill are all great places to donate items you may not use. Spring cleaning and moving are excellent times to assess which items have donation appeal. For me, for now, I’m focusing on clothes and other items that I don’t want to have shipped to Madison.

My first purchasing indecision was boxes. So I purchased two large and two not so large to test them out full of books and media to see how heavy they get. I was leaning towars the large boxe since a large box means less boxes. Unfortunately, they also meant heavier boxes. After filling one with books from my library, I almost strained my back and legs carrying the thing to my bedroom, where I’m storing the move boxes. So my first packing decision was: smaller boxes. I find the 18 x 12 x 10 to be a nice manageable size. I can envision carring them up a flight of stairs, without the image of myself bent over and painfully weezing. That’s good.

I find great use of those large boxes (20 x 18 x 24) I purchased and then banned from my move packing.  They are perfect for clothing to be donated to UCP. They have a scheduled pick-up in my area on May 18, and for my whimsy, I am practical. Goodwill will survive without my donation this time.

So as I’m going through my closet, and giving away pants, I realize, I have a slew of pants still tagged, never worn, purchased by me from when I first moved to San Francisco. They are gorgeous pants that needed me to find a tailor. Except by the time I had narrowed down tailors to a handfull, I had also realized that San Franciscian’s dress ultra casual and are kindof snobby about it. My dress in Madison was business or dress casual. Basically nice slacks, and nice button down shirts, an occasional jacket here and there.

I love natural fibers and fiber blends, so cotton, silk, and cotton-silk, cotton-linen, linen-silk blends are my favorite. So after my move to San Francisco, when I need to refresh my closet, I went out and bought these items, then realized, I needed jeans and khakis to best fit most dress codes. So now, I’m giving away brand new, eight year old pants and jackets to UCP.  I hope someone loves them.

So my UCP boxes consist of: 1 box dress and casual pants; 1 box dress and casual shirts; 1 box sweaters and pull-overs; 1 box bedding and dress shoes; and 1 box kitchen supplies. It’s hopefully a good haul for a good cause. So now I’m back to my move packing. Once all my books are packed, I can then start the process of advertising things for sell. I already know that my bicycle, my desk, possible computers, boxing bag, weight bar and weights, etc. will go. No way I’m shipping that stuff, if I have the need repurchasing is the better option.

So back to packing fun.
