Plant Photos for Pat
Pictures of my indoor herb garden for my friend Pat.
My friend Pat asked me to take some pictures of my plants, and my mini-indoor herb garden. Possibly she was prompted to do so, due to my incessant whining about how putting my flowers out for some sun, managed to kill off quite a few of them. As well as cause me to perform a lot of nursing care on the remainder. Lesson learned.
I decided to start an indoor herb garden, since I just haven’t wanted to work out doors in the garden since I moved back to Madison. But I love plants, and I love cooking with fresh herbs, so I figured, get some pots and let’s see what grows. I started off in the winter with rosemary, oregano, parsley, English thyme, and cilantro. I expected Parsley and Rosemary to be the easiest; and while the Rosemary played along, the Parsley’s been a bear. I can’t figure out what’s going on with. Only one mediocre cutting since January. I had such a time with the Parsley, that I held of seeding the Cilantro (and I LOVE Cilantro).
The English Thyme also proved problematic, but the Winter Thyme has been doing well. Sage has been surprisingly easy. All in all, I’m learning a lot. Like while my kitchen is nice, bright, and full of sun in the winter; it’s a bit pale and uneventful for sun in the summer. Plant rotation and track lighting are proving useful tools. The same goes for my living room—bright winter sun, but the tree leaves insure that hardly a drop of sun comes through the windows during the summer. I’ve taken to leaving the light on, and will be adding some track lighting for the three hanging pots within the next week. Hopefully that will help. I did learn my lesson about placing indoor plants outside for sun. If your growing herbs indoor, they can not immediately enjoy outdoor sun and weather. They have to be conditioned to it, and then may not want to come back in. So don’t do it, except with hardy plants.
Anyway, there are about 50 or so photos in the group, though many are just different views of the same plant. I’ll update plant names as I find them.

Update: (6.7.06) I’ve just been going through my photos, and noticed something of importance at this time in my life—photos. For years, my friends and family members have complained that I did not keep photos of them. It was all true. I’ve never been a photo hound like most of my family; and I rarely needed photos to trigger memories of my friends or family memories. Words and sounds were more accurate triggers than photos for me (still are), so I have no photos or only single random photos of some of the more important and influential people in my life.
I have a single photo of Bob Smith (Robert) in dancing mode, but a slew of images and memories of this wonderful guy, who helped me make my life something more than just responsibility. I haven’t a single photograph of Theresa Sumner who sheltered my spirit through uncertain times, just by being herself and being there—despite my efforts to keep her at a distance. I have random crowd shots of Kim and Kim, whom had very different influential roles in my final college years. Then moving faster through history, Deborah Bey who has been a great confident, I only have a single photo of which can be seen pictured with my herbs. My friend Mary is there, as well as my mom. My first ex-girlfriend Kirsten, and some former housemates all show up in my plant photos.
But here’s a brief tribute to those who don’t. Bob, Wan, Deb, Theresa, Kim, Kim, and Lora—here’s to you and hoping life has given you the things you need to make it wonderful. I love and remember you all; despite the lack of photos.
