QT: Panel Puts Same-Sex Marriage Bill on Hold
In an articled carried in the San Francisco Chronicle, Bejamin Lopez, a lobbyist for the Traditional Values Coalition is quoted as saying,It's a matter of who you're going to believe. Are you going to believe a professor on a liberal campus who wants this garbage crammed down the throats of Californians?
This had to be my first Quoted article. The “Quoted” category will harbor random tidbits of absurdity and occasional wisdom as spoken by posturing idiots around the world.
So the article written by Rona Marech, a San Francisco Chronicle Staff Writer, is basically about AB1967, a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in California. The bill is currently on hold while the Appropriations Committee reviews it for cost to the state.
The Traditional Values Coalition is, surprise, against the bill, and argues that it would cost the state unknown money and drain the states already empty coffers. Meanwhile, Brad Sears, Director of the UCLA School of Law think tank, The Charles R. Williams Project on Sexual Orientation and the Law, has testified that allowing gay marriage would bring in $22.3 to $25.2 million annually to the state budget.
This “Quoted,” like all future “Quoted” isn’t to argue the pros and cons of either side, but to marvel in the mindless pundrity of people. For example, today’s Quoted has Mr. Lopez, who must surely be a learned man, dismiss Mr. Sears, another learned man, with the fabulous quote:
It’s a matter of who you’re going to believe. Are you going to believe a professor on a liberal campus who wants this garbage crammed down the throats of Californians?
I love it. I love it. Do you love it? First the argument isn’t complete. Obviously if one is contrasting beliefs or anything, one should provide an object to contrast with. So really, Mr. Lopez is stating, “It’s a matter of who you’re going to believe, some liberal tom-foolery (oops, my words) or me” (my emphasis on him). But he provides no evidence so that anyone could actually intelligently weigh the decision, well should I believe Brad or Benjamin.
Personally after such poor phrasing on Mr. Lopez’s part, I’d go with Mr. Sears. Unfortunately, I was already on Brad side, so I guess I don’t count.
So ends, this episode of “Quoted”.

i don’t understand the fuss regarding gay marriages. all arguments against it are as stupid as mr. lopez’s argument - although it can’t even be called that since (as you pointed out), he doesn’t provide ANY evidence.
morons.
we truly need to adopt the ‘live and let live’ mindset.

I agree. But human nature is to resist change until its shoved down your throat and your forced to swallow. To that regard, I think what Gavin Newsom did and San Francisco, and the subsequent mayors, city clerks, and judges have been doing around the country is the best bet. Most people won’t change their mind, until gays and lesbians have been getting married for a few years and they realize the world didn’t crumble around them. Then they may be, “well that wasn’t to bad, sure let them get married.”
