Ringside: Tired of Being Sorry

A little flamenco guitar and some accordions over a 4 to the floor beat, introducing…Tired of Being Sorry.

The first released single, "Tired of Being Sorry," which by the way has a tasty club remix provided by the Dummies, features a little flamenco guitar and some accordions over a 4 to the floor beat. Here Thomas asks for a little forgiveness and understanding "Maybe you were you were right, baby I was lonely, I don't wanna fight, I'm tired of being sorry... So far away so outer space I trashed myself I lost my way, I've got to get to you, I've got to get to you." from Isaac McCalla, About.com

So it's 2am, and I'm watching "Crossing Jordan" on A&E. It's pretty much a ritual. Except they just restarted from the series beginning again, so as I'm re-watching episode 3 or 4 of season one, I get bored and flip to VH1. Because while it's not as hip as MTV, they at least still play music. I come in mid-song, it has this flamenco guitar and an image of this women, whaling on this man in a boxing ring. OK. So I stay to watch. The vocals are both smooth and rough. On this track they sound tired and slightly hurt, and the singer hits an oddly husky falsetto— can that even be done?? It's strange but great, so I whip open my trusty laptop, and wait for the video to end so I can get an artist and song title.

The video was "Tired of Being Sorry" by the earnest dou, Ringside. Ringside is Scott Thomas and Balthazar Getty. The irony is, I was just watching the video for last week's Alias, time-shifted of course, Thursdays have way too many enjoyable shows fighting for the same two hours of airtime. Anyway, I downloaded, not just because I like Alias, but because I love Amy Acker, and she was to begin her first of unknown number of episodes on Alias. So as I'm watching the introduction credits, I'm thinking wow this has changed. Then I see the name Balthazar Getty, and I'm thinking, "Who names their kid Balthazar?" Come on, Apple, Ka-el, and other numerous celebrity baby naming mishaps aside— why name your baby after a demon? In fact the Lord of Demons, if I recall. Obviously, this family hasn't watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Charmed. Shame on them! Oh' you might give them credit for bucking tradition, but really, it's the Getty's (yes, the oil titans).

Anyhow, long story, longer, I figured since I thought evil thoughts about his name, I'm now being forced to admire him in his multiplicity. I thought his introduction as one of Sydney's new team members, was effectively understated; and now I'm thinking I like his music as well. Sigh. Damn you, Balthazar.

I trot over to the iTunes Music Store, search for Ringside, and low and behold, there album is in my clutches within a minute. After listening to the music clips, I decide I can fork over the money for the full album. I start listening to "Tired of Being Sorry" immediately. I love the guitar and the rough-hewn vocals. I believe the lyrics and vocals are all done by Scott Thomas, and his vocals are somewhat enticing. I can't say why.

Don't worry, my love for Roxy and New Music Tuesday hasn't faded. Roxy, still holds the roll of my favorite way to be introduce to new music; but music videos are cool as well. Especially the one associated with "Tired of Being Sorry". Directed by Joaquin Phoenix, it's definitely an attention grabber or rather yet, it grabbed my attention.

My recommendations purchasing the album. I think my purchase will grow on me and its always nice to have albums that age well. If you don't want to spend $9.99 giving some relatively unknowns a chance, then at least purchase Criminal, Tired of Being Sorry, and Struggle a go.

Lyrics

I don't know why
You wanna follow me tonight
When the rest of the world
With whom I've crossed and quarreled
Lets me down so
For thousand reasons that I know
To share forever the unrest
With all the demons I possess
Beneath the silver moon

Maybe you were right,
But baby I was lonely
I don't wanna fight
Tired of being sorry

Chandler and Van Nuys
For the vampires and their brides
Were all bloodless and blind
And longing for a life
Beyond the silver moon

Maybe you were right,
But baby I was lonely
I don't wanna fight
Tired of being sorry
I'm standing in the street
Crying out for you
No one sees me
But the silver moon

So far away, in outer space
I trashed myself
I lost my way
I got to get to you
I've got to get to you

Maybe you were right,
But baby I was lonely
I don't wanna fight
Tired of being sorry
I'm standing in the street, yeah
Crying out for you
No one sees me
But the silver moon

Kings of Convenience!!!! Wow, color me impressed. Norway’s own kings of poignantly, pastoral semi-acoustic pop. I like, I like. I’m debating the album, “Riot on an Empty Street”. Maybe, I’ll start off with an EP. The Failure, EP, as well as your recommended, I’d Rather Dance with You, EP both seem very good in clips.

Glad you liked, Ringside. Thanks for the introduction to Kings of Convenience. I love being introduced to new music.
