Roxy, New Music Tuesdays, and Podcasts

New Music Tuesday's has got me totally crushing on Roxy.

I have a new crush. Her name is Roxy[1] and she is the host of Apple’s New Music Tuesday podcast.

Podcasts are a non-traditional broadcast method. Basically they are shows or mini shows put on mostly by a wide array of professional and non-professionals. As you can see, I’m planning on offering some from my site, if I can ever guilt myself into finishing a recording. Podcasts have been very grassroots, but Apple just brought them to the mainstream, by offering subscription management services as part of its iTunes Music Player and iTunes Music Store.

Now, I don’t know anything about Roxy, except she has a good recorded voice—it’s clear and emotive. She seems to be a little quirky, and I imagine kind of sassy. This week on New Music Tuesday, she reintroduced me to Marc Broussard; made me miss Joan Jet, and make fun of Dashboard Confessional; and want the Michael Franti/Spearhead version of “What I Got”. Okay, so it helps she’s talking about one of my favorite subject, Music, and YES!  I realize that she probably doesn’t write the segment all by herself, but…

She’s so much more enjoyable than just reading Apple’s, arguably well composed, newsletter. And she’s already gotten me to explore music I might have otherwise missed, like Marc Broussard. Marc opened for a concert I was at last year sometime. I had no idea who he was, but I loved his opening set. In fact, I recall leaving the main concert early for being decidedly un-enthused, but desperately trying to find out more information on the opening act. Well, at that time I got a name, but not much else.  What a difference a year can make.

imageNow thanks to Roxy, I’m the proud new owner of Carencro, the new iTunes special release version that includes a live version of the song, Home. Both albums display the same, except for the July 2005 date for the newer release, so get the newer album. Marc has a kind of bluesy, cajun feel to his voice and music. He has a good, kindof soulful voice and his music arrangements are clean and seem to perfectly accompany his voice and lyrics.  I don’t want to enthuse too much, but take a listen to “Home” and “Let Me Leave”, and you’ll see what I mean.

Now back to Roxy and New Music Tuesday. I can honestly say, that New Music Tuesday has skyrocketed from casually unaware to my most anticipated weekly podcast. The other podcasts, I like are also great, but for me tend to be more topical. For example, I love Moria Gunn’s Tech Nation, Science Friday, San Francisco Chronicle’s Backstory and the Dawn & Drew Show. But especially with the first three, I tend to pick and choose over the topics. For example, I loved Moria’s interview with Alva Noe, UC Berkeley Professor of Philosophy about his book “Action in Perception”, but not so much interest in her interview with Dr. Allen Husband and his research into dietary supplements and menopause (sorry Doc).

Needless to say, my love of music has helped propel this show, but so has Roxy, and the show’s quick and easy to listen to format. Admittedly some of the shows I listen to tend to be longwinded. Which is good when the topic is entrancing, not so great when the topic was just mildly interesting. So if you like music and want some help exploring new things, give Roxy some attention. She sounds sassy, pretty, and reasonably intelligent, and I’m not the jealously type.

Footnotes

[1] 2005-07-15: Corrected spelling of the name Roxy. Originally spelled as Roxie, but a couple of posts from other sites and a comment (possibly by Roxy herself) corrected my mistake.

thanks...and for the record I actually DO write the segments. Glad you like Marc, he’s truly grand when you give it enough time to sink in. It’s easy to have fun with a podcast like this when all I have to do is talk about music!

Cool. Well I for one have been loving the segments. My only compliant is that they never seem to be available Tuesday morning. It would be fantastic to wake-up to them, but often they’re not available until after 8pm or 9pm (which sucks). But the podcast itself is great!!!

Yeah I know it’s a bit frustrating but getting the new music together sometimes means we have to wait for it to get into the store so we seem to always be a few hours later than we’d like. It will get better though, I promise! thanks so much for listening.

and you definitely didn’t need to update, I liked the Roxie spelling!

Thanks to Roxy I have picked up at least three new groups I didn’t know existed!  I’m really not into most of the podcasts I’ve listened to, but Roxy is so very cool (not to mention she sounds like a total hottie which is never a bad thing) that I keep coming back every week.

Keep up the great work, Roxy!
