Site Modifications This Weekend (2005-3-4)

I figured I was overdue for some basic modifications to the site. With the exception of the banner and some minor tweaks, most of the design was out of the box. For the most part, I was fine with that, except that I disliked having boxes around the text, and other things.

So since, I’ve also been planning to add some new sections, I figured it was time to get rid of some of the CSS that irritated me. A lot of it is minor things, some smoothing out of fonts used, minor color adjustments, removing or adjusting borders, etc.

Other things are not as minor like, the urls no longer have that pesky index.php in them any more. They are shorter and cleaner. I also added a Photo Gallery. Expression Engine added a new Image Gallery Module, and while I had been ignoring it, I had to set it up for a friend last week, and liked it a lot, so now you no longer have to run over to my .Mac account to see my photos. I’m going to transition them to this site.

You’ll also see, spacer’s for two other new sections--Collections and Podcasts. The Collections are will feature song histories. It’s a little hobby of mine, tracing and tracking the history of various songs that I like. Basically, I look up background information, original composer, release dates, writers comments and the like. But the fun part is trying to find and rate all the other artist who have recorded various renditions of the song. This section requires a lot of custom code, so may not get done this weekend. But I added it to the Upper Navigation Menu to force myself to keep working on it.

The final new section is a brand new project of mine--podcasting. Basically, its like amateur radio in a .mp3 file. Actually, I’ve been really into a few shows available through podcasting. The Dawn & Drew Show which covers just whatever interest them. They are also Wisconsinites, and the show is just darn entertaining. I also follow, IT Conversations, its more geeky, but has a number of interesting interviews. I particularly enjoy Dr. Moira Gunn’s Tech Nation interviews.

So after learning more about the process of podcasting, I brainstormed that it might be the solution to my horrible lack of articles under the “Books” category of my blog. You see, I love to read, but I don’t like reviewing books. I’m more of a did I get anything out of the experience type of girl, and even if that’s just “it provided two hours that I didn’t have to stress about work”, that’s often good enough for me.  On the other hand, I do love talking about books, and exploring how little tidbits from this book or that book can join to adjust my world view or inspire me, or just make me ponder.

So I’ve decided to give podcasting a go, and explore books through that. I’ll have more details about format, etc. in a later post, but be on the look-out.

Let me know what you think of the changes.
