Socialist Party Takes Over Spanish Government
"It seems like the sky is crying," said one woman. Up to 2.3 million people took to the streets of the Spanish capital to mourn the 199 dead and 1,450 wounded. Nationwide, officials estimate between 8 million and 12 million people joined in the street protests against the bombings. Suspicion for the coordinated terror attacks has fallen on Basque separatist group ETA and Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda terrorist network. --CNN Saturday, 13 March 2004
Tragedy set the stage for a massive political upset in Spain, where the rulling Popular Party was voted out of office by millions of Spainards. The Spanish Socialist Workers Party led by incoming Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero will now take office. With evidence being collected that Spain was a terrorist target because of their support of the United States in the war against Iraq, the people of Spain who were vocally against going to war decided to vote the ruling Popular Party out of office.
This isn’t a story about victory; 200 people are dead and thousands more lay injured. Its a story of how people face and adapt to tragedy. When almost half the population can motitvate and rally to express their grief, rage, and anger against the terrorist bombings, as well as mobilize voters, I say that Spain is the country to watch to look at alternative methods for dealing, coping, and living with terrorism.
