Quick Pick: Taking Lives

If you twist and turn away If you tear yourself in two again If I could, yes I would If I could, I would Let it go Surrender Dislocate -- Lyrics from Bad by U2

So today was my escape day. I spent hours upon hours at the Metreon watching movies, while avoiding my life. I did have one false moment, where fear of my reality broke through and I called my voicemail to see if any messages of doom were left. But after experiencing that sicening sense of relief one gets when you find your fear misguided, I went back to watch yet another movie. This time Ms. Angelina Jolie in the modern thriller, Taking Lives.

Be forwarned, I’m not one for refraining on spoilers. So if you haven’t seen the movie, and don’t want to know too much detail about it, STOP READING NOW.

Okay, so the movie starts as it ends, with the haunting “Bad” by U2 from their Wide Awake in America album. “If you twist and turn away. If you tear yourself in two again...” The songs is as beautiful as I remeber it, but adds a nice sense of creepiness to the opening scenes.

So despite my forwarning, I don’t want to give too much away, because its a thriller, that actually thrills. I didn’t find the big mystery to be who is the killer. I was fairly certain within the first 10-15 minutes. ThoughI did have some doubt, when some secondary plots were introduced, but they (the doubts) were just momentary.

What was most thrilling about the movie was how you attempted to prove your intuition was correct. This is, of course where doubts are raised.  So as my mind mentally works along with Angelina Jolie, my libido takes a few time outs here and there to appreciated the beauty that is Angelina Jolie. Because despite the fact that she look thinner than I had seen her in awhile, girl is hot. Very hot. And when she looks at one of the male characters with just a hint of interest. She’s even hotter.

So I recommend seeing, “Taking Lives.” It’s enjoyable, thrilling, shocking even in some moments. Ms. Jolie is duly hot, eveen when she is quirky and slightly nerdy (in a couple of scenes). In fact, almost all the actors are good. I found myself wanting to smack Olivier Martinez; finding a kind of dog-earred attraction to Jean-Hugues Anglade; and being equally creeped by Ethan Hawk and Kiefer Sutherland.

But really, the movie relies on Jolie to carry it, and she does a good job, despite some plot turns that had the potential to derail the story.
