The Flickering Flames of Hell Have Frozen

Dobson's news about what SpongeBob is up to would be alarming enough on its own. But Dobson has learned SpongeBob is not acting alone. He's a ringleader. He's formed unholy alliances with such other well known cartoon characters as Jimmy Neutron, Arthur, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and Bob the Builder. (I mean, all you have to do is look at Bob the Builder and you think: "Village People.")

Who’d have thought that one day, I’d have to announce my support for SpongeBob. Yes, that’s SpongeBob. Go ahead snicker. Lord knows I’ve laughed at more than a few friends forced to sit through hours daily of the lad, as their children fell under his thrall.

First of all, let me state, while I don’t really care if SpongeBob is gay or not, I do mentally hope not. Why? No reason, or the same reason, why I always cringed when people stood up and claimed Whitney Houston was a lesbian. Just that mental recoil, of “Please, No! I don’t want them in my community.” I know, I know, sexual orientation crosses race, gender, creed, religious orientation, yadda, yadda, yadda. So, of course, it stands to reason that we have some icky folk in the community as well. But there is such as thing as the gay and lesbian closet, and sometimes its all the wrong people using it.

Yes, this is me, holding on to the proverbial toaster oven, and whining to my mother and other entities, “Do I have to give it to THEM?”

So, unless you live in a rock, or maybe under one, you’ve heard the absurd controversy around SpongeBob SquarePants (is that his last name or just a descriptor?). “Conservative Christian organizations have accused a children’s cartoon character, SpongeBob SquarePants, of being part of a secret agenda to promote homosexuality.” Christian’s beware, “He may be part of a sinister “pro-homosexual” plot to manipulate and brainwash youngsters. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, one of the conservative Christian groups sounding the alarm, tells us so.”

Sigh, so even though, less than a month ago, I would have argued against anything related to SpongeBob, I find myself in the position of having to support the character, mostly for just annoying the religious right, but additionally for attempting to promote diversity, regardless of if he’s gay or not. Now he’s in the position to be defended as SpongeBob super hero of diversity.
