World Leader Pretend: Tit for Tat

It's just the rouble-rousing misspent bouts— It's a sweet slice of disheveled pop brilliance.

"Tit For Tat" takes the band into a decidedly different musical direction as they slip out with an almost tropical shuffle while Ferguson lets loose with the most sing-songy vocals on the entire album. It's a sweet slice of disheveled pop brilliance. —IGN Insider

World Leader Pretend is an up and coming alternative music group, with strong echoes of the British Pop scene. There music can easily be compared to Doves, and Starsailor. Others might say Radiohead or Coldplay for their lyric stylings. They hail from New Orleans. Yeah, that's right New Orleans; and took their name from an REM song.

I was introduced to World Leader Pretend by Roxie of New Music Tuesdays. She mentioned and played a sample of the song, Bang Theory. I liked the sample, yet it confounded me as well. There was something about it that reminded me of the half year, I spent listening to Virgin Radio UK, and one of the groups I heard then. Well to unravel the mystery, I purchased, Rubble-Rousing Misspent Bouts, the EP with a few of the songs off their full length album, Punches.

Well, that's when I heard Tit for Tat. How can you not love a song that includes the words ragamuffin and rouble-rousing. Beautiful! Quirky! I love it. First off, Tit for Tat sounds like nothing else on the EP. It's kind of light and airy, and Keith Ferguson switches his voice to this kind of melodic, sing-songy style. The music, the rhythms, the vocals all combine to just produce this pretty, pretty, song that makes you want to shuffle, cha-cha-cha, or break into some type of official dance step you don't know the name for.

I've listen to song 25 times already, and I've only owned it a week. It's addictive, and just a little reminiscent of Doris Day's Latin is for Lover's rendition of Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps. Just in spirit, not in tempo. Anyway, I love this song, and love this EP. I've already added the album, Punches, to my iTunes Shopping Cart. I recommend that you do as well.

Lyrics

Caroline
She says, I am the one
And I have all her nights
but I'm having fun
I'm going to turn you over
inside out
it's not the leariness
don't scream and shout
It's just the rouble-rousing misspent bouts
in a way

Conjure up a splendor
all on her own
For the worse trimester
I've ever known
I play the ragamufin holy book
And you'll be tossing glitter works of art
And somehow I'll still end up back on top
and on my way

I myself I've found
Living is too far away

I myself I've found
Living is too far away

Tit for tat she says
we're not in such prose
Softer in the eyes,
taking the blows
I'm going to give it up and end it fast
I recommend you make this blow your last
And all you crass women are truly crass
I'm a way

Note: I've tried to get the lyrics just by listening. But we all know how prone to errors that methodology can be. So if you have any corrections, drop me a note in the comments.
