Commentary/Review

The Madison Pop Festival was just in town, and of course, I missed it, because I have this awful habit of keeping up with the local newspapers. So I was reading, the Isthmus the Tuesday, after the Thursday it had been released and it was commenting on two up and coming bands, the Ambulettes and the Bracelets.  I was interested in both groups, and as I’ve done a thousand times before, I looked at the play date only to see that it happened over the weekend.  Wahhhh!!!

The band that interest me the most was Ambulette. The review indicated that Maura Davis had very strong vocals, and they seem to have a following from when she was in another band, Denali. On pain of dismemberment, I’ve never listen to Denali, but apparently quite a few of their fans are still broken up about the break-up. I was happy to find that iTunes had an EP from Ambulette.  I love EPs, they’re a great way to get a feel for a band without forking out too much money. Not to knock the single, cause I buy a lot of them, but a single only really tells you how an artist performed on one song. It may be indicative of their style and flavor, or it maybe happenstance.

Wikipedia states that “Maura is noted for her fragile vocals and minimalist lyrics. In addition to having a unique ethereal vocal style, she can play both keyboards and guitar.”.

Personally, I don’t think her vocals are that fragile. They do have an ethereal quality but they can wail like a siren. The song from the EP that stood out the most for me was Fall. The song starts like a fog that covers and hides your pain and fears; then her voice like a soft mist sprinkles around you, right before it blasts open.

I’ll be here
telling no one
I’ll be here falling away
Into all
these spaces
Wait right here telling no one
Wait right
here to show them the way
Into all these spaces

Some of the other songs on the EP are a bit closer to pop, so you may hear one of them as a single. But if you have $5, it’s well worth the price of giving Ambulette a go. Just download the EP from iTunes and enjoy.

Lyrics

Test your head
To see if somethings good
Write on
walls
To give me some kind of proof

It's easy
to run away
Or else I will fall into you
It's easy
to run away
Or else I will fall into you

Save your
heart
That's all you have
Finish what you
start
And get your empty facts

Its easy to run
away
Or else I will fall into you
It's easy to run
away
Or else I will fall into you

I'll be here
telling no one
I'll be here falling away
Into all
these spaces
Wait right here telling no one
Wait right
here to show them the way
Into all these
spaces

Test your head
To see if somethings
good
Write on walls
To give me some kind of
proof

It's easy to run away
Or else I will
fall into you
It's easy to run away
Or else I will
fall into you
Or else I will fall into you
Or else I
will fall into you

I'll be here telling no
one
I'll be here falling away
Into all these
spaces
Wait right here telling no one
Wait right here to
follow the way
Into all these spaces
