Commentary/Review
My first introduction to the Gray Kid was through his parody video of Justin Timberlake’s Sexyback, titled Paxilback. The video was funny as hell and showcased his amazing vocals very well. After watching Paxilback a number of times, I ventured to the Gray Kid’s website and downloaded one of his free single’s Lonely Love. Listening to Loney Love, Paxilback, and a live version of Oh’ My Attitude convinced me that giving …5,6,7,8 a go was a good idea.
The Gray Kid has a lovely voice, whether its in falsetto, rap, or his smoother R&B stylings. It was the first thing I notice with Paxilback, but Lonely Love really brought that fact to light. A lot of men sing in falsetto these days, and in reality, often their falsetto voice is far better than their normal vocals. But Gray Kid’s normal vocals are smooth. The Los Angeles Times describes him as a cross-pollinates hip-hop with indie rock, pop with R&B, irony with candor and humor with pathos — not to mention sex with politics.
Lonely Love remind of the falsetto of Daryl Hall. Gray Kid has R&B’s soulful underpinnings, but with a delicious hip-hop flavor that borders on pop. The song is just smooth; even with its electronic beats.
