Commentary
Ready for another visit to the musical inclinations of Alnisa Allgood? So I created this playlist, Not Ready to Make Nice, about two months ago, when I first saw the video and heard the song from the Dixie Chicks', Not Ready to Make Nice. Obviously, I was moved. I have to say even more saw after seeing their performance of the song on the David Letterman show. Natalie Maines voice was awesome, just so emotive—this combination of fiery passion, anger, and strength; with this hint of powerlessness but a refusal to give up. That, combined with the Martie Maguire's impassioned playing of the violin/fiddle. Their were moments when she looked like she was going to cry—a testament to how much pain their former fans and country music industries treatment of them has caused. I don't want to forget to mention Emily Robison, who graciously and gracefully rounds out the trio, but in this instance she was more a stabilizing force than noticeable companion.
So all said, I was touched, moved, and quite ready and willing to "not make nice" as well. I was also supportive, purchasing the album, Taking the Long Way and the single with video for Not Ready to Make Nice from the iTunes Music Store. Now all I had to do was round out the playlist. Some playlist come together immediately. They just happen. Others take work. Not Ready To Make Nice took some effort, but I'm pleased with the final results. So let me quickly highlight some of the songs, ad let you have at it
Playlist Highlights
- Not Ready to Make Nice by the Dixie Chicks: I named the playlist after it, of course I think it's awesome.
- Chocolate by Snow Patrol: This is the first of a three songs in the playlist that were used, very well, in new movie trailers. This song was used in the trailer for the new film Last Kiss (YouTube) starring Zach Braff. Everytime I hear the song I think of the trailer and the opposite. Genius. I can't wait to see the movie.
- My Skin by Natalie Merchant: This song was released quite awhile ago, on Natalie's Ophelia album. It's delicate, luscious, and lyrically harrowing… This song was also used in the trailer for the new Kathleen Brooks film Loving Annabelle (YouTube).
I'm the slow dying flower
In the frost killing hour
Sweet turning sour and untouchable
Oh, I need the darkness
The sweetness
The sadness
The weakness
Oh, I need this
—Natalie Merchant, My Skin
Because I've been treated so wrong,br />I've been treated so long
As if I'm becoming untouchable
- American Skin (41 Shots) by Bruce Springsteen: I just wrote about my rediscovery of this wonderful song, a few post back. It's quiet anger and rousing energy makes it a compelling fit in this compliation.
- Razzle Dazzle Rose by Camera Obscura: Can I say enough about this Irish group? Tracyanne Campbell is crushable. She offers up cute, vulnerable, melodic pop with such clarity that it's hard not to be impressed. I was humming the song in my sleep, before I even realized it had made an impression. Genius or Evil Genius? I don't know yet, but I'm enjoying exploring the differences.
