Commentary

I started listening to this playlist towards the end of March/beginning of April 2006. Obviously, it was inspired by Pink's Stupid Girls (video), but over the course of few weeks, as I tweaked and adjusted, it grew into something very different. With Stupid Girls as a focal point, I wanted songs that were a bit more rock, punk, and or dance. I wanted to bang my head a little with some good beats, and hopefully some great guitar work. But you know me, I can't totally overcome the melancholy, so I had to intermix some tearjerkers and folkies. So there you have my newest playlist.

The highlights include:

  • Pink's Stupid Girls. Well duh. I love this song, and the video is funny as hell. Lyrics such as,
what happened to the dream of a girl president?
she's dancing in a video next to 50 cents
has generated a lot of discussion about why so many young girls to 'bitches' and 'ho's' for rock and hip/hop videos. But aside from inspiring generational gender equity questions, the song is fun, so more power to Pink.

  • I've just been introduced to Blue October from a late night viewing of their video, Hate Me (video). Hate Me is evocative, sad, and rocking in that Deftones' Change way. A screaming chorus, with blazing guitars, and sad, so sad, accompaniment violin, and kicking lyrics.
    Hate me today
    Hate me tomorrow
Hate me for all the things I didn't do for you
Hate me in ways, yeah ways hard to swallow
Hate me so you can finally see whats good for you

  • You're Love Means Everything, Parts I & II. Faultline has created an inspiring album with Your Love Means Everything, and the two title songs do it justice as an introduction if you've never heard the album. I love Chris Martin's vocals on Part II, but even the instrumental Part I is heart-wrenchingly beautiful. And as you know, I did a Dana/Alice, L Word music video of Part II a few weeks back.

  • Stereophonics' Superman. This is a great song, but I have to admit, that if I for some reason don't get to hear the lyrics
    Superman on a aeroplane
    Sitting next to Lois Lane
You gotta that woman but you want her gone
So you can fuck a teenage blonde
I feel all cheated. I love that part of the song.

  • Peter Gabriel, Cyndi Lauper, the Smiths, and David Bowie with Queen add a bit of the 80's flare to the list. I still love Peter Gabriel's Red Rain, boy is that song proving itself timeless. The Smith's Louder than Bombs album is one of my favorites. No one does happy little sad songs than the Smiths. Yeah, hang the DJ, cause Heaven Knows I'm miserable now. Morrissey is good, but he was great when coupled with Johnny Marr.

  • Gregory Douglass and Rachel Sage are two artist whom I wish would break. It doesn't have to be super big but they both deserve nice record contracts that make them well-off if not wealthy. Teeter and Stark are the two albums that I use songs from here for Douglass. Both are great albums; though I still love Teeter more. Rachel Sage I was introduced to from MP3.com. Yeah, remember that site. Wildflower is the song I selected for this list, so give it a listen to.

  • I'm not even certain I need to mention the All-American Rejects, Weezer, Franz Ferdinand or the Fray; they've each come out of their emerging new artist phase and have breakthrough albums. So if you haven't heard of them, wow, just turn VH1 on for a countdown or during its video blocks.

I've been super busy with work for these last few weeks and this playlist has been guiding me through the minefield of closing projects, new clients, and multiple new projects by current clients, and has even gotten me to take some time to enjoy the sun and the turn to spring. So I hope you enjoy.

Hi, longtime lurker here, finally dragged out of my shell with this post.  I find you can find out so much from a person based on a mixtape er playlist.

I had Panic in my head while at work today.  I found myself humming it then finally I just started singing, my officemate was not so impressed with my sudden burst of song wink

Hang the dj, hang the dj, hang the bless-ed dj…

Yeah, I love that refrain. I’ve definitely found myself singing it this month. No co-workers to give me crazy looks, though my cat did look in askance.

What a great playlist, Alnisa!  I still am so behind in my music gathering, as you know.  Just wait, I’ll be part of the millennium yet…

I miss you; let’s talk soon!

Hey you. How’s Texas treating you? I’m getting ready to introduce a new playlist. I’m still tweaking it some, but a lot of new songs have been capturing my attention lately, so this will be that list. But this playlist has kept me entertained for almost two months, especially Blue October and the Fray.
