Commentary
This playlist, inspired by the Killer's and Blue October's wonderful collaboration with Imogen Heap is my last official playlist of 2006. I've been listening to this playlist for a few months, so I have to admit it has undergone a number of minor revisions. It started out a little softer, but I wanted to add songs with a bit more of a rock edge to this mix—hence Faith No More, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, and Hinder. But me, being me, even my rock hard playlist is not so heavy on the metal as it is on the sentiment.
Should I admit, that there are a couple of songs that I have played over 250 times this year? Yeah, surprised me as well. Can you guess which?
Playlist Highlights
- She's My Ride Home by Blue October: This entire album ranks in my top 20 albums of 2006. This song, crept up on me, I was being amazed at the wondrous emotion of "Congratulations" and this laughing refrain, came out grabbed me and kept hold of me. I can't say how much, I've been amazed by Blue October. I know older fans are split between delight and disappointment for this album, Foiled, but I think its a wonderful showcase of the bands talents wrapped in an accessible format. It's great popular music still wrapped in the trappings of alternative rock.
- Lips of an Angel by Hinder: I was listening to VH1's Best of 2006 show, and one of the male comedian's stated that he didn't understand why any girl would like this song. I've got to say, I'm a girl, and I like this song. Maybe its the brashness; but more likely its the honesty. Not all guys do it, but many guys will cheat, lie, and otherwise do harm to their current relationship. But most of them always lie after the fact. There are a million and one songs in the annuals of music history with men declaring they're sorry, and how much the love—whomever—and it was all just a mistake, and it will never happen again. Let me just say, as much as I enjoyed Usher's Confessions, Part I and II; did I really believe that he'd never cheat again? No. And that's why I like this song; the guys being a dog; talking/romancing his ex-girlfriend while his current girlfriend is in the other room. But he's being honest, and that's kind of refreshing.
- Oh My Attitude by the Gray Kid: I first saw this song as a live concert clip of the Gray Kid. I was impressed, that even with the lousy sound from the clip, the song was still enjoyable, and the Gray Kid's energy was palatable. It made me wish I was in L.A. and I hate L.A.
I was five and he was six,
we rode on horses made of sticks.
He wore black and I wore white,
he would allways win the fight.
—Nancy Sinatra, Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
