Commentary/Review
Just doing some catching up on Numb3rs. This episode was most notable, to me, for highlight the friendship between Charlie (David Krumholtz) and Larry (Peter MacNicol).
This episode, we found out that instead of, or perhaps on top of, just being quirky by being homeless and sleeping in the campus steam vents, that Larry had applied and was accepted for a six month assignment with the space program. Obviously, a moment of joy and congratulations, until you pause to think, This is someone I care about.
I mean does anyone really want their loved ones in the space program (unless they’re an administrator). It’s not that the deaths are more frequent than car accidents or plane crashes; but that they are far more dramatic and seemingly tragic. So Charlie convinces himself that Larry won’t commit to this. He’s desperately grasping that his friend and mentor won’t leave him to participate in something so potentially life ending.
Anyway, the main plot is about some CIA program that created assassins out of prison inmates; and is only notable for when Don Epps hits the CIA agent. For me this episode was far more about the little sub-plots, especially the Charlie/Larry relationship; then of course some strides made in the Charlie/Amita relationship (finally); and the adorableness that is the relationship between Larry and Megan Reeves (played by Diane Farr).
I’ve got to admit that Diane Farr’s character annoyed me when she joined the staff. This may be because, I’m a fan of Sabrina Lloyd and was annoyed with her disappearing from the show (even though it seemed to be at her own request). But placing Megan in a relationship with Larry was an absolute stroke of genius; because I went from grudgingly accepting her as part of the crew to looking forward to seeing her interact with Larry more frequently.
This episode was good for emotional substance.
