A review of Season One of Showtime's Dexter, the likeable blood-splatter expert who moonlights as a serial killer. This is mostly a character review, with some episode specific commentary.

Commentary/Review

I love Dexter. It has a dry, dark humor, that Michael C. Hall just embodies as Dexter Morgan. A forensics’ blood splatter expert by day, and serial killer by night. He’s a dissociative psychopath. That is what makes the show so entertaining‚ the struggle with emotional response to various situations.

Dexter’s sister, Debra Morgan. Debra played by Jennifer Carpenter—whom I last saw hysterically running down the hall in Angela Robison’s D.E.B.S. is wonderful. She brings exuberance to her character, that is a perfect offset for the “life on the sidelines” feel that Dexter has.

David Zayas as Angel Batista really gives a stand-out performance, as well. I’ve seen David in a number of shows—Numb3rs, Law & Order: SVU, the Closer, and most recently Burn Notice—but this is the first time that he really stands-out. His man in denial that his life has irrevocably changed was poignant.

I wasn’t uncertain of Julie Bentz’s character, Rita Bennett. But Julie brings her a calming certainty, just underneath all that fragility, despair, and situational uncertainty. She’s a woman on the verge, finally going after what she wants. It’s beautiful and mundane, the light in her eyes, when she states she wants a normal life.

I’m also impressed with Harry Morgan, Dexter’s adopted father, played by James Remar. I’m maybe more impressed by Harry than James. Harry is pretty darn impressive. First off, a father that pays attention to his kids. I know it happens, but rarely on television. But secondly, to identify this darkness and need within his kid, and work with him significantly to channel it into something good—amazing. I was plenty impress by young Dexter’s relationship with Harry, and Harry’s guidance.

I’m eagerly awaiting Season Two.

Uhghh… no space to talk about Dex’s brother. (sigh)
