This is my new, favorite YouTube video. I think I've watched it more than twenty times already. As you may know, this summer my entertainment pleasure was delightfully delivered by: downloads of Bones episodes through iTunes, an introduction to Kyle XY (iTunes link), the exclamation that is Eureka, the lovely and talent Kyra Sedgwick, and the only reality show I watch on TV—So You Think You Can Dance?.
I'm almost ashamed to admit, how much of a screaming fan I was of the show. Suffice to say, I called in multiple times weekly to support the dancers who I thought performed well. But, by far, my favorite couple on the show was Benji Schwimmer and Donyelle Jones. They were called the Diva and the Geek, which doesn't totally describe their appeal, but it's a nice starting point.
Benji has been dancing all his life. He's kind of geeky, with this slightly manic, funny, energy. But beyond that he's just nice. And he's a fabulous dancer. I admit to being so happy that he was partnered with Donyelle. Because my thoughts are, that if Donyelle had been partnered with any of the other males, she would have never made the Top Ten. That's not to say she's not a great dancer, because she is, and you can see how wonderful she is on the show. But our ability to see that display of raw dance power, sensuality, playfulness, depth and range to capture so many different dance types; could have all been lost with a partner who focused on her weight instead of her ability.
I recall Ryan's greeting of Heidi, when they were first partnered. Heidi is another favorite of mine. It was obvious, he didn't want to be partnered with her, and it massively harmed their performance. Heidi pulled out of it, because she's that good. But can you imagine how quickly both dancers would have been eliminated if Ryan had been paired with Donyelle? Donyelle, I believe needed Benji. He accepted her for who she was. He saw her as a marvelous dancer, with wonderful talent; and he sought to compliment that. Which he did so wonderfully. Yet, another reason why I love Benji Schwimmer; as if the dancing weren't enough.
Anyway, if you missed the joy that was Benjelle (Benji/Donyelle)—a bit more of a Benji video than Benjelle, from my perspective—this video will let you in on just a tiny little part of the spark they created together. It's happy, go lucky, lots of fun, with lots of chemistry, and a whole lotta great dancing. So more power to benjixislove because this video rocks.
