Description
One of the best episode summary videos, I've ever seen. Great use of music and video clips. The episode is "The Wish" from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Commentary

The Wish is one of my favorite Buffy episodes. I consider it a lynchpin episode. Most would argue with me over that, but the telling of a Sunnydale without Buffy is, well, telling.

The gang is pretty much going about their lives, each involved in their own misery to some degree. But life on the Hellmouth, doesn't really allow for too much wallowing; and getting what you wish for can be deadly. Cordelia, a fringe Scoobie, played wonderfully by Charisma Carpenter, was recently hurt by Xander, when she caught him kissing Willow. Long story short, she's hurt, they're hurt, everyones kind of moping, but Cordelia makes a wish to make it all better. Unfortunately, instead of blaming Xander and Willow, she blames Buffy, and wishes Buffy never came to Sunnydale, CA.

O' the pain we wrought when we don't comprehend what we sought. The wish, joyously granted by the demon Anyanka, in her Sunnydale high school student face of Anya, creates a Sunnydale without Buffy. And if you thought living on a Hellmouth was kind of weird, freaky, and deadly; then you probably don't want to imagine what it would be like without the Chosen one. Yes, its darker, scarier, and far more deadlier town. The population has just given up on the night. Get home before sunset little kiddies, if you want to grow up.

This clip, by Anabir does an excellent job of summarizing the episode, and has a fantastic music selection. The video starts with the granting of the Wish, then immediately shifts into what the wish has wrought. We learn quickly that Buffy isn't dead, is still the slayer, but just damnably absent from Sunnydale. This absence has created a Sunnydale ruled by the Master, and Willow and Xander are his minions (well technically they seem to be his primary enforcers). All the players are there, though some for a short time. And as you can imagine, the further we get into the episode, all of the beloved Scoobies and even Buffy get killed off one by one.

Little did Cordelia know—poor, poor, sad, sad Cordelia. She only lasted long enough to barely get an inkling that maybe her wish wasn't the best thing she could have done to get over her heartbreak. Luckily Giles survives long enough to right the world, and we end the episode with our gang returned to us, and the former Sunnyhell, a bad, bad dream that we think we might have had.

This episode, though not a Joss Whedon zinger filled episode, was written by Marti Noxon and does have some good quotes. I like this one

Xander: Behold the beauty that is now. Who's with me?
Buffy: Actually, he's making sense. We're young and free in America. How dare we be spun by love, or the lack of same?
Willow: Absolutely. It's self-indulgent. I'm in. I'm on the joy train.
Buffy: That didn't work. Who wants chocolate?

Finally, let me comment on music selection. Prelude 12/21 is a song by AFI that I really is just a wonderful peice. It's short. It's kind of sad. But it rocks. Then it just stops. But this is one of the best uses of the song, that I've seen in a music video. I've seen other adequate uses. But really this song just paces fantastically with the episode clips—from Cordelia's opening wish, to the introduction of Giles, but especially when our trio (quartet)start getting killed off. First Angel, then Buffy takes care of Xander such brutal casualness, then Oz dispenses of Willow; and we have Buffy facing off against the Master. Look how the Master's casual romp, slide down the stairs connects to the music. O' then snap, literally. There goes Buffy's neck right on the final tones of the song. Then we end with happy gang. Perfection!

Three cheers to Anabir. Hip, Hip, Hooray! Well done, chap!

Lyrics

This is what I brought you, this you can keep.
This is what I brought you, may forget me.
I promise to depart just promise one thing.
Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep.

This is what I brought you, this you can keep.
This is what I brought you, may forget me.
I promised you my heart just promise to sing.
Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep.

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa
(Whoa, Whoa)
Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep.

This is what I thought, I thought you’d need me.
This is what I thought, so think me naive
I'd promised you a heart, you'd promise to keep.
Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep.

Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep.
